Writing Internship (5+) |
| Interns will be required to submit one, 500-word article each publishing week and to attend weekly staff meetings for brainstorming and for evaluation/help. In addition, writing interns are required to invest an additional hour each publishing week (either on Tuesday or Wednesday) on in-office work which involves, but is not limited to, writing Brief News reports, creating and assisting in the conceptualization of news spreads, and giving their input into the creation of the publication for that week. Interns will be assigned writing beats (be it academic policy, PSGA, clubs, campus life, etc) and will be expected to develop sources. Exceptions for the required weekly submission will be given for those interested in writing a longer, investigative piece, or if their work is intended to be used as the weekly feature spread. As the semester progresses, I will be looking for improvement in writing ability and depth in research and objectivity. Articles will be graded in a check-minus/check/check-plus capacity and will be discussed personally with the writer during the weekly staff meeting. Final grading will be decided on shown improvement throughout the semester, and completion of said articles. Copy Editing Preference Internship (2) |
| An off-shoot of the writing internship, copy editors are required to be available on the Tuesday before publication in order to proofread content. Copy editors, in collaboration with the Chief Editor, are required to create an active dialogue with the editors and writing staff regarding the various strengths and weaknesses in regards to grammar, flow, punctuation and voice in a writer’s given work. Copy editors are required to contribute a biweekly feature spread on a topic of choice created with approval of the Chief Editor. Interns are required to attend all weekly writers meetings. Interns with a preference in copy editing will be graded on the skill and knowledge exhibited regarding the content they edit and the work they produce. Copy editors will be graded on the initiative they take throughout the semester in editing staff articles, writing their own articles, and maintaining a dialogue with the editors regarding published work. Layout & Web Assistant Internship (3) |
| Working closely with the layout editor, interns will be required to learn the process and programs required to create The Independent. Interns will be responsible for the layout of the Back Page in the development of their skills, with content first being approved by the editors. Interns will also be expected to assist in the creation of advertisement graphics, promotional posters, and later, full pages and spreads. As well interns will be responsible for managing and updating The Independent’s website on a weekly basis, keeping in contact with the editors for the instruction in layout and content decisions. As well, the intern will be required to work with the layout editor in learning the appropriate programs and process in updating the website. Grading will be determined by the layout editor’s sense of the interns’ knowledge of process and programs and completion of said responsibilities as well as managing and updating the website. Print Media Office Intern (1) |

Intern will work closely with the Print Media Office Manager in order to better learn and understand their responsibilities. Will learn the technical issues that go into making The Independent each week, intern will be responsible for maintaining an active dialogue with Office Manager regarding what tasks need to be done in order to create and print The Independent more efficiently. Intern must be available Wednesday nights and be available to work late (10PM – 3AM preferred).
No application currently required for position. All applicants must meet with Print Manager before hire. |
Photography Intern (1) |
| Intern will be required to attend weekly writers meetings (Monday @ 10pm) and submit photos to accompany various articles for that publishing week. Additionally, photography interns are required to be present on the Tuesday before publication in order to assess and brainstorm with the editors which photographs will be used. Interns will be responsible for the editing of images (color correction, levels etc). Those interested should be comfortable attending various events, speaking with staff members and have a good working knowledge of campus life.
