Joshua Tonsfeldt ’04

Josh Tonsfeldt ’04 is an artist and educator.

“Tonsfeldt’s photographs, videos, sculptures and collection of found objects are often worked into larger sculptures and installations, responding to the site of their display,” writes Dublin’s Douglas Hyde Gallery, where his work was exhibited in spring 2023.

“Juxtaposing his part-photographic works with part-sculptural objects, Tonsfeldt holds our certainties about space, time, and the “real” up to a penetrating light.

“There’s an unexpected poignancy to these works, a sense of struggling for definition that locates the technological firmly within the human.”

Michael Wilson, Artforum

Tonsfeldt’s work has been shown widely in the United States and Europe, most recently at international institutions, including the Museum of Contemporary Art (Chicago), the DeCordova Museum (Boston), Mass MoCA (North Adams, Massachusetts), Gamec (Bergamo, Italy), and the Museum of Contemporary Art (Toronto).

His work is in the collections of public and private institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Thoma Foundation, the Parrish Museum, and the Perez Museum in Miami.

He’s currently a lecturer in the New Media program.
