Don’t Risk Losing Important Data - Save Files to Your Home Directory!

The College provides a secure Home Directory for every faculty and staff member to use for storing work-related files.  Your Home Directory is available when you are connected to the wired network on Campus.  Home Directories are stored on a server and backed up regularly.

When saving your documents, files and other important data on a Windows computer, it is important to save them to your “Documents” folder (which syncs with your Home Directory).  When saving on a Mac, you should save to your Home directory icon on your desktop.  This will keep your data secure, and you will be the only one with access to it.

Each department also has a departmental shared drive to securely store data that is to be shared with others in your department - and your department may also use a team collaboration site in SharePoint.

If you use a Laptop, your Home Directory or Departmental Shared Drive are only available when you are connected to the wired network on Campus.  So - if you saved files to your laptop while off Campus, remember to save them to your Home Directory or Departmental Shared Drive once you are back on Campus. See Back up Data to Home Directory for instructions.

Remember:  If you save any files locally on your laptop, they will be lost if your hard drive fails, if your computer gets a virus, or if your department purchases a new computer for you.  Saving to your Home Directory or Departmental Shared Drive will secure your data and prevent data loss.

To be sure your computer is syncing properly to your Home Directory, or if you have any other questions, please feel free to call CTS at x6465 for assistance.
