Food Recovery Network. By Sammy Jimenez

May 19, 2021

This semester I had the opportunity to intern for the SUNY Purchase food recovery network (FRN) chapter. Annually massive amounts of food are prepared for human consumption. However, they are usually lost or wasted in different stages of the food supply chain. The highest impact of food waste is mainly at the household level. So, the food recovery network focuses on putting a stop or limit the amount of perfectly good food that is still edible to be thrown in the garbage and end up in a landfill. Instead, this food is repurposed and redistributed to nonprofit organizations that fight food hunger insecurity. Ideally, because of the pandemic, I could not make these food recoveries; however, we used social media to spread awareness of these issues and the benefits of making informed decisions about what consumer food products you eat and advocating for more clean and pure organic foods. These methods were essential to help fight food hunger and bring awareness to consumer food labeling.
