SUNY Optional Retirement Program - Information on Reinstatement to a Former Membership Date
The State University of New York (SUNY) Optional Retirement Plan (ORP) was established in 1964 as an alternative to the NYS Employees Retirement System (ERS) and Teachers Retirement System (TRS). The original carrier was TIAA-CREF, with three additional carriers (Aetna [now ING], Metlife and VALIC) added in 1994.
In 2005 Tier reinstatement (which allows an employee who had a break in service to return to their original Tier) is being made available to ORP members. Please read the program information carefully. If you have had a break in state service and would like to apply for reinstatement to your original tier, you must complete the application form and return it to the Office of Human Resources.
While there is no deadline for completion of this form, an initial application window period has been established from January 10 through March 31, 2005. Applications received during this period will result in a refund of employee contributions and, if necessary, an adjustment of Employer premiums retroactive to January 1, 2005. Applications received after this window will be adjusted on a prospective basis from the date the application is received.
