General Style Preferences: Punctuation

Internal and Terminal Punctuation
Between sentences, use only one space (not two) after the period, question mark, or exclamation point. Within sentences, use only one space after a colon or semicolon; use one space before and after an ellipsis; and do not use any spaces before or after a dash. Periods and commas always go inside quotation marks. Other punctuation—dashes, question marks, exclamation points, etc.—go inside the quotation marks if they apply to the quoted material. Periods, exclamation points, commas, semicolons, and other internal and terminal punctuation should be set in the type style (e.g., bold, italic, regular/roman, color) of the preceding word.
