| Joseph Fashing, B.A., M.A., Ph.D., J.D. (Emeritus Professor of Sociology) Joseph Fashing was born in Los Angeles California and received his B.A. degree in sociology from the University of California, Santa Barbara. After a three year sojourn in industry (Boeing), he returned to UCSB to complete his master’s degree. From there, Professor Fashing went to the University of Oregon where he received his Ph.D. in sociology. After completing his Ph.D., Mr. Fashing accepted a joint appointment as assistant professor of sociology and educational foundations at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. Not many years later, after a conversation with Sam Gould, the founding Chancellor of the SUNY system, in which Gould told Fashing that Purchase was going to be one of the most exciting colleges in the country, Fashing accepted an appointment as assistant professor of sociology at Purchase College, then in its infancy. During his time at Purchase, Mr. Fashing has taught a range of subjects, including “Art and Society” and “Law and the Arts.” The latter course was developed after taking a series of courses on art law at the University of Florence (Italy) while a law student at Pace University. Prof. Fashing’s publications include books and monographs as well as journal articles on higher education, educational politics, labor issues, teen- race relations, community politics and medical sociology. He retired from full-time teaching in 2005.
