Purchase College will be sponsoring an Alternative Break Trip to the Gulf Region affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita over the winter break. This is an opportunity for students to immerse themselves in the areas affected by the Hurricane's and contribute directly to the relief efforts in that area.
Students will work with a non-profit organization, Rebuilding Together, assisting in the clean up and reconstruction of residential homes. Due to such high demand, we may be able to take additional students to work with Habitat for Humanity. Students will also have the opportunity to engage in personal development and leadership experiences. There is no need to be skilled in construction to participate in the trip.
The trip will be from January 7-15, 2006 and includes transportation from the College, lodging, and food. The cost of the trip is $200. Participants are responsible for raising their cost of the trip. Participation requires the time commitment of the full week for the trip as well as at least one pre-trip meeting in December, date to be announced.
Over 70 students applied to be part of the Alternative Break experience this January. As of this moment, we are only able to take 15 students. We are hopefully we will be able to arrange for a second work-site with Habitat for Humanity which will enable us to take an additional 15 students. Students who were selected for the trip were notified by e-mail.
