2009 Season in Review

Developing Panthers on the Road to Success
Edelmann, Hintz Show Glimpse of Bright Future

Purchase, NY (Nov. 3, 2009) – Each season since its winless 2006, Purchase has improved on the volleyball court.

After going 0-28 three years ago, the Panthers won five matches in 2007, eight last fall and now 11 this year – the second under head coach Nelson Kwok. Slowly but surely, the women’s volleyball program is turning into a fierce competitor in the Skyline Conference. Under the guidance of Kwok and first-year assistant Kim Martinez, Purchase showed some serious signs of taking another step forward.

Assuming all goes according to plan, the team will return every one of its nine players next year with not one senior on the roster this fall. The Panthers have a plethora of young, outstanding talent headed up by Taylor Edelmann. The freshman dominated nearly every statistical category both offensively and defensively for the Panthers. Edelmann earned two Honor Roll distinctions throughout the year and was named the Skyline Player of the Week in late September. Edelmann was among the league’s top rookies and is a serious contender for Skyline Rookie of the Year. She was later named to the All-Skyline 2nd Team.

Not to be outdone, Olivia Hintz also enjoyed a fine season. Edelmann’s partner in crime, with her long arms and powerful spike, killed over 200 points this fall, up from 134 a year ago. Hintz also led the team in blocks (14) for the second year in a row and earned an Honor Roll nod of her own in mid October for her efforts.

Purchase rounded up their frontcourt with the return of Michelle Fetky, who missed most of last year with a torn ACL. Donning a knee brace on her knee, “Meesh” swatted 93 kills for the season with no signs of limitation.

Transfer Erika Stahl wasted no time in bursting onto the Panther scene. The junior led the team in service aces (48) for the year and committed the fewest errors on the attack of the regular starters with just 49.

The women keep getting better each year, and with everyone expected to return next fall, the Panthers may have finally put together the squad this college has been waiting to see.

*2008 Season in Review*

Ever-Improving Panthers Win Eight Matches

Purchase, NY **(Nov. 1, 2008)** – First year head coach **Nelson Kwok** has the Purchase College women’s volleyball team on the right track after a solid fall season in which the Panthers improved to eight wins – narrowly missing the playoffs in 2008.

Purchase battled the injury bug all season long, losing key starter **Michelle Fetky** to a torn ACL early on.

The Panthers were led by Olivia Hintz and **Mickaela Olson**, two freshmen who really stepped up with Fetky sidelined and the team without several starters at various points of the season. The upstart squad also received solid contributions from rookies **Lindsay Froman** and **Amanda Zambrana**.

Hintz finished with a team-high 134 kills and a team-leading 26 blocks. Olson totaled a team-leading 290 assists. Froman led the team in service aces (43) and finished second in kills (76) and blocks (14). Zambrana finished third in kills with 57.

Returners Laura Dykas, **Katelyn Shankey** and **Lauren Raia** also played well for Purchase. The Panthers say goodbye to seniors Shankey and Raia, but return a solid unit next fall with their sights set on a playoff spot.

*2007 Season in Review*

Panthers Narrowly Miss Playoffs

Purchase, NY -- After a winless campaign in 2006, the Purchase College women’s volleyball team narrowly missed the playoffs this season – the team’s first in the highly competitive Skyline Conference.

The Panthers were in the playoff hunt until their final tri-match of the season against league rivals Farmingdale State and St. Joseph’s – Patchogue. Though hard fought, the Panthers were overmatched and they dropped both 3-0. The Panthers finished the season 5-24, with a record of 2-7 in conference play. The Panthers, who at season’s end won the Skyline Conference Sportsmanship Award, had some strong individual performances this fall, which they will look to build upon for next year.

Outside hitter **Michelle Fetky (FR/Lk. Ronkonkoma, NY)** was twice named Skyline Conference Rookie of the Week for her outstanding play. Fetky was a strong all-around player for the Panthers, finishing among team leaders in a number of key categories. She finished second on the team in kills with 139, and her 151 digs was good for third on the team.

The Panthers also got a strong performance out of **Janina Martinez (SR/Yonkers,** **NY)**. Martinez finished with 180 kills, 206 digs and 60 blocks – all of which lead the team.

**Kimberly Durbin (SO/Selden, NY)** had a solid season as well, leading the team with 264 assists.

Although they fell short of the playoffs this year, they are returning a number of core players as they look to make strides next fall.
