Disappointing Fall Points Toward Brighter Future

Purchase, NY (Nov. 3, 2009) – It was the Brooklyn Dodgers of the 1950s that spawned the phrase, “Wait ‘til next year!” after a run of near-misses to a world championship. While the stakes don’t hold true for the Purchase men’s soccer team, the near-miss part is spot on.

Last year saw the Panthers drop 10 games, with nine of the one-goal defeat variety.  The team not only outshot their opponents, but also outscored them. Yet, the Panthers were on the outside looking in at the postseason. This year’s start looked oddly familiar. Purchase dropped two of its first three games – both by the score of 2-1, the same margin in six of their losses in 2008.

The team seemed to bounce back after that, winning two games and tying one in their next three contests. Unfortunately, it was just the calm before the storm. The Panthers went on a six-game skid while being outscored, 32-3. The team went on to win one of their last three for an overall record of 4-10, missing the playoffs for a second straight fall.

While the season did have its dark spots, it had its share of bright spots. Sebastian Munoz established himself as a playmaker, filling a huge void left behind by last year’s scoring leader Geoff Robbins, who graduated. Munoz led the team in goals, assists, points, shots-on-goal and even game-winners, more than doubling many of the team’s totals by himself.

Purchase will see a mass of changes in the offseason. The team graduates five seniors, including co-captains, Matthew Levy and Cole Charbonneau. We’ve also learned that the Panthers will hand the reigns over to a new coach as Paul Brooks will not return next fall.

Though the change seems insurmountable, the team has a nucleus of sophomore talent ready to step up to the challenge. Along with Munoz, both Nick Esposito and Ki Walker are expected to return for their junior seasons. Esposito was second on the team in points, while Walker is a major asset defensively. Robert Acosta should also provide a scoring punch upfront with fast footwork and terrific ball handling skills.

Also in the good news department for the Panthers is that some veteran leadership is expected back. Starting goalie Alex Frenkel, the versatile David Kurzweil, and the other half of the Charbonneau combo, defenseman Luke Chabonneau should all return for their senior seasons.

With a strong recruiting class expected, Purchase is hopeful next season will be full of promise.

Hard-luck Panthers Just Miss Playoffs
Robbins Named to All-Skyline Second Team

Purchase, NY (Nov. 10, 2008) – It was a hard luck season for the Panthers, losing 11 games by one goal, but the Purchase College men’s soccer team fought valiantly to the end, falling just one game shy of the playoffs.

They enjoyed a solid fall on the college’s new $2 million turf field, going 6-10 overall and 2-4 in the Skyline Conference. The Panthers played well defensively, but simply could not avoid some tough breaks, dropping five games by a margin of 2-1 as the team’s offense had its share of ups and downs.

Senior forward Geoff Robbins did a majority of the damage on the offensive end with 14 goals and one assist for a team-high 29 points. At the conclusion of the fall season, Robbins was named to the All-Skyline Second Team. Teammate Daniel Grabowski-Clark finished with 18 points on seven goals and four assists.

The heralded Panther defense was headed by team captain Andrew Giugno, sophomore Luke Charbonneau, newcomers Maxim Luiggi and Ki Walker and senior Benjamin O’Handley.

In goal for the Panthers were Alex Frenkel , David Kurzweil and Garrett DeTemple. Frenkel racked up over 900 minutes of playing time and had 44 saves and one shutout on the season. Kurzweil played over 500 minutes and stopped 34 shots on goal.

Purchase finished the season on a three-game win streak in which they allowed no goals and scored 10 of their own. The Panthers will look to return to the playoffs next fall behind a solid returning core and an exciting incoming recruitng class.

Short-handed Panthers Fall In Quarters

Purchase, NY – The Purchase College men’s soccer team punched their ticket to the playoffs this past season.

The Panthers clinched a playoff berth following an impressive 3-2 victory over rival Mount Saint Vincent in the last regular season game of the year. Purchase was pitted against Farmingdale State in the first round of the Skyline Conference Tournament, but without captain Matt Irish-Jones (SR, Clarence, NY), who was lost to injury in that final game, Purchase fell 6-0 to the Rams.

Irish-Jones had a solid season, finishing with 15 points on seven goals and one assist. He was thusly named to the All-Skyline Second Team. Irish-Jones was not the only Panther to be recognized this fall, as Geoffrey Robbins (JR/Glen Ridge, NY) was named Skyline Conference Player of the Week for his play in the final week of the regular season.

Teammate Daniel Grabowski-Clark (SO/Farmington, CT) also earned the honor twice. The forward lead the team with 32 points on 14 goals, including three game winners.

Goalie Noah Colantuono (SR/Pawling, NY) had a successful season as well for the Panthers, leading the Skyline Conference in saves with 116. The Panthers were lead in assists this season by Sebastian Ribeiro (SO/Brooklyn, NY),  who finished with seven.

The Panthers finished 6-11-1 this season, including a 4-4-1 conference showing under coach Paul Brooks. Purchase returns a strong core for 2008, including Robbins and Grabowski-Clark and Ribeiro.

2006 Men's Soccer Season

2005 Season Re-Cap

The 2005 Purchase Men’s Soccer campaign will go down as a transitional year for the program.  With a first year head coach and entrance into the new North Eastern Athletic Conference, the future is bright for the Panthers.

The 2005 season got off to an exciting start with a 1-0 win in the first week over Brooklyn College.  The Panthers followed up that victory with their first ever NEAC win in a 5-2 decision against rival Bard College.  In that game, the Panthers came back from an early 2-0 hole to score five unanswered goals highlighted by sophomore forward Matt Irish-Jones (Clarence, NY) who netted four.

Conference play continued with some hard luck losses including an overtime defeat to conference semi-final bound Penn State Berks 2-1.  The Panthers battled all throughout the season and got a much needed 3-0 win over NEAC foe D’Youville College on Parent’s Weekend.  Although, the Panthers fell a game short in their bid for the playoffs, they finished their season with a 5-2 at Webb Institute to cap the campaign.

Overall the Panthers had a successful year in their re-entrance to NCAA Division III athletics.  With a strong nucleus returning and recruiting going well, the coaching staff is excited about the future.
