Under Charney, Panthers Show Signs of Improvement

Purchase, NY With four starters returning next season, the Purchase College men’s basketball team can look back on the 2007-08 campaign as an important rebuilding year for the program. Despite only winning three games, the Panthers have found themselves a new head coach to steer the ship in the right direction. Jeff Charney, who replaced Denny Carroll midseason, has had his interim tag removed and embarks on his first full season as head coach next winter.

The valiant Panthers looked much improved in the second half of the season under Charney, learning a completely new system. High-scoring point guard Tyriq Harrington (FR/ Corona, NY) had a strong rookie season. Harrington led the Skyline Conference in scoring, averaging 18.6 points per game. He also led the Panthers in steals with 50, and assists with 71.

For his efforts, the playmaker was named to the All-Skyline Second Team. Harrington was not the only newcomer to show promise, as forward Kazeem Famuyide (JR/Staten Island, NY) was a solid contributor as well. Famuyide finished second on the team in scoring with 13.5 points, as well as grabbing the second most rebounds on the team.

The rebounding leader this season was co-captain Henry Ferrarin (SR/Irvington, NY), who finished averaging nine rebounds to go with his 8.9 points per game this season. The Panthers also found some success behind the 3-point line this season.

Co-captain Michael Wimmer (SR/Woodmere, NY) led the Skyline Conference in 3-point point percentage, finishing at 50 percent for the year in conference play.

Chad Charney (SR/Port Chester, NY) also stretched the floor for the Panthers, highlighted by a 9-for-12 performance from behind the arc at St. Joseph’s College. Maurice Richardson (FR/Elmont, NY), who played off the bench and also saw some time in the starting lineup, also made great strides in his first collegiate season. Reserves Jeremy Sullivan (JR/New Rochelle, NY), Chris Evangelista (JR/Shelter Island, NY) and Marc Flaxman (SO/ Bronxville, NY) also made solid contributions for the team.
