Panthers Make Stunning Turnaround in '08-09
Billups, Lewis Named to All-Skyline Team

Purchase, NY (Feb. 26, 2009) – To steal from the old cliché, “What a difference a year makes.”

From 3-22 a year ago to 15 wins and a playoff berth. That was the story for the Purchase College men’s basketball team this winter. In his first full season behind the bench, head coach Jeff Charney led the Panthers from last place to the Skyline Conference Tournament.

Purchase would fall in the quarterfinal at Old Westbury, but there is no doubt that the program is on the right track to remain competitive and possibly challenge for a league crown for years to come.

For starters, Purchase’s underclassmen are among the best in the league. Sophomore sensation Marvin Billups dominated, leading the conference in scoring (23.1 ppg) this season. Then there’s sophomore’s Justin Walters, Tyriq Harrington, Corey Orgias and maybe top recruit Chuck Thompson ready to return next fall. Walters led the league in steals and teamed with Harrington as one of the top guard duos off the bench this year.

Senior Day 2009

The Panthers will miss backcourt starters Jerrell Lewis and Chad Charney and front court standouts Kazeem Famuyide and Henry Ferrarin, but are excited about the prospects of returning such a strong core of underclassmen. Purchase will also look to replace valuable bench contributors Chris Evangelista and Owen Mann.

Lewis was named to the All-Skyline Second Team this winter. Billups garnered All-Skyline First Team honors and became the first in Purchase basketball history to be named to the D3 Hoops.com All-Atlantic Region Second Team, which would then by followed by a prestigious ECAC All-Star Second Team honor.

Six seniors might be gone from the roster next season, but with two starters returning in Billups and Orgias, and Harrington, Walters and Thompson set to fill the void in 2009-10 left by the departing seniors, the sky is the limit for the Panthers next winter.

Under Charney, Panthers Show Signs of Improvement

Purchase, NY With four starters returning next season, the Purchase College men’s basketball team can look back on the 2007-08 campaign as an important rebuilding year for the program. Despite only winning three games, the Panthers have found themselves a new head coach to steer the ship in the right direction. Jeff Charney, who replaced Denny Carroll midseason, has had his interim tag removed and embarks on his first full season as head coach next winter.

The valiant Panthers looked much improved in the second half of the season under Charney, learning a completely new system. High-scoring point guard Tyriq Harrington (FR/ Corona, NY) had a strong rookie season. Harrington led the Skyline Conference in scoring, averaging 18.6 points per game. He also led the Panthers in steals with 50, and assists with 71.

For his efforts, the playmaker was named to the All-Skyline Second Team. Harrington was not the only newcomer to show promise, as forward Kazeem Famuyide (JR/Staten Island, NY) was a solid contributor as well. Famuyide finished second on the team in scoring with 13.5 points, as well as grabbing the second most rebounds on the team.

The rebounding leader this season was co-captain Henry Ferrarin (SR/Irvington, NY), who finished averaging nine rebounds to go with his 8.9 points per game this season. The Panthers also found some success behind the 3-point line this season.

Co-captain Michael Wimmer (SR/Woodmere, NY) led the Skyline Conference in 3-point point percentage, finishing at 50 percent for the year in conference play.

Chad Charney (SR/Port Chester, NY) also stretched the floor for the Panthers, highlighted by a 9-for-12 performance from behind the arc at St. Joseph’s College. Maurice Richardson (FR/Elmont, NY), who played off the bench and also saw some time in the starting lineup, also made great strides in his first collegiate season. Reserves Jeremy Sullivan (JR/New Rochelle, NY), Chris Evangelista (JR/Shelter Island, NY) and Marc Flaxman (SO/ Bronxville, NY) also made solid contributions for the team.

2006-07 Men's Basketball Season

2006-2007 Panther Outlook

Check out some of the reasons why Purchase Basketball is such an outstanding choice. Denny Carroll and his staff are convinced that Purchase College is THE academic and athletic choice for you! Please contact the coaching staff with any questions you might have. Best of luck to you and your team this upcoming season!

Men's Basketball 2005-2006 Season Recap

The '05-'06 Season started with the hiring of a new head coach, Denny Carroll, and assistant coach, Darryl Atkinson, both of which set the stage for building a respectable basketball program. This past season proved to be a learning experience for the team as a whole. With our re-entry into the NCAA Division III ranks and our membership in the newly formed North Eastern Athletic Conference the team experienced a much higher level of competition, faced higher caliber athletes as well as elevated commitment levels in the teams they competed against. The team learned what it will take to be successful in the future in this new arena. Despite the team's record the athletes improved their individual skill levels and learned a lot about themselves. Both coaches have been doing a significant recruiting job bringing in new players for next year's season. Our goals for next season are to bring in more talented players, more energy, commitment and a greater focus for improving the entire program.

Men's Basketball 2004 Preview

After struggling early last season with adjustments under Coach Joe Ross, the Panthers look to build on a strong second half that took them to the finals of the Hudson Valley Men’s  Athletic Conference tournament.

bballWhile All-Conference selections Steve Sage and Marc Pierre will be missed, this year’s squad returns a solid core of experience and talent including Akantunde Henderson-Amare, Peter Tambakis, Benny Rupel, Desmond Turner, Jamal Ien, and Richie Rivera.  Coaches Ross and John McLoughlin also look for major contributions from newcomers Adam Kalker, Clinton Lowe, Jaison Correa-Spain, Chad Charney, Carlton Wilson, Mike Wimmer, Dan Minieri, and Fred Gibson.

Look for Rupel, Minieri, and Wilson to bring a strong inside presence, along with a balanced Panther attack that finds at least six student -athletes equipped to play two and three positions each.  “We learned a lot about each other last year.  These guys hung tough and it is time for them to see those efforts pay off,”  explains Coach Ross.  “People will see a core that is relentless, intense, and intelligent.  We look forward to putting it together this season.”
