Accessing Databases -- Using Local Libraries -- Finding Journal Articles

Library services for students studying abroad

This information is targeted to students registered at Purchase College and taking a semester abroad.

As a distance learner you are, or course, entitled to use all of the services available to on campus students at Purchase College.  However, you may need to be more vocal about letting us know your needs while you are abroad.

Information/support

If you have a query that is subject-related you can e-mail, telephone, fax or write to your subject librarian. If you do not know the name of your subject librarian, please refer to the list of subject contacts at: /library/instruction/default.asp#Find_Librarian_Subject or contact the Head of Reference and Instructional Services, Rebecca.Albrecht@purchase.edu  for more help.

Accessing library databases and other resources

As a remote study student, you have access to all of the library’s online materials. The Library has access to many full-text databases, providing you with access to hundreds of thousands of full-text articles from scholarly journals, popular periodicals and even pamphlets and newspapers.

To view these proprietary materials online you will be asked for a username and password. Your username is the same for the Library’s Electronic Resources as it is for your Purchase College Computing Account.

The Purchase College Library also subscribes to NetLibrary (resource for full length electronic texts).  If you are using NetLibrary materials, your Purchase College Computing account id will not be helpful to you.  Instead, NetLibrary expects that you will set up accounts while on campus BEFORE YOU LEAVE FOR YOUR REMOTE LOCATION.  This will only take your 5 minutes in the library, so please take the time to do it.  Click on the following link while you are on campus to register yourself as a NetLibrary user http://www.netlibrary.com/signup.asp

If you are/were unable to do this and would like access to this database, please email Rebecca.Albrecht@purchase.edu and we’ll set up a generic account for which you’ll need to reset the password.

A Note About Purchase College Library Databases

Not all databases provide full text access to materials they index.  In fact, their strength is in the indexing—the ability they give you to find out where a certain article on a particular subject was published and when.  Some databases contain only brief descriptions of material available but others can provide you with an abstract of an article or the full-text.

Every database vendor has their own signature look and language and options.  Most will allow you to print, save, email, and mark (or make a list of) records.

To see an alphabetical list of our databases, go to: /library/electronicresources/databases.asp

To see a list of databases by subject area, go to: /library/instruction/databases.asp

Using local libraries

Wherever you are in the world there is a possibility that you may be able to join or make use of a local library.  Ask your professor to direct you to an appropriate library in the area.

Finding Journal Articles

To track down articles available at the Purchase College Library or in one of our many online databases, please see our “Finding Journal Articles” page at: /library/instruction/finding_articles.asp Feel free to email Valencia.Wallace@purchase.edu with any other issues regarding available journal articles.

Obtaining print copies of articles not held at Purchase College Library

If you require an article from a periodical that is not available at the Purchase College Library, it may be possible for you to obtain a copy through InterLibrary Loan.  Please contact Rebecca.Albrecht@purchase.edu with these requests and we will do our best to accommodate you.
