Classes are conducted in the municipal schools of Pisciotta, modern buildings overlooking Mediterranean beaches from a dramatic hillside. Some classes, such as Art, Art History and Drama Studies, will also use the streets and squares of the town and the surrounding olive groves. Field trips include visits to ancient archeological sites at Velia, Paestum, and Pompeii, and to the medieval monuments of Amalfi and Ravello. In addition, a day in Naples, two days in Florence and three in Rome afford a unique opportunity to study some of the greatest cultural treasures of Western civilization from various disciplinary perspectives. These trips are included in the price of the program.
The program is open to students, teachers, and other interested individuals. An Italian language course is required of all participants, who may then choose an elective from the other offerings. Classes will meet for 4 to 5 hours daily Monday through Friday.
Students will pursue the intensive study of Italian language and culture in a beautiful and historic location, while earning full undergraduate, graduate and in-service credit. Undergraduate credit is available through Purchase College (SUNY). Graduate credit is available in some courses. In-service credit may be earned depending upon the policy of the individual's school district.
ExcursionsSeveral optional excursions (for example, a weekend on the island of Ischia) as well as lessons in Italian cuisine may be available at modest additional cost.
