Continuing Education - Youth and Precollege

Summer 2016 Youth Programs in the Arts:
Young Architects

Grades 5–8

Young Architects

Typical Day

Location: Social Sciences Bldg., Room 2002

Develop ideas, plans, drawings, and models of your fantasy buildings using the Purchase College campus, with its varied contemporary examples of architecture and landscape, as inspiration. Learn how to manipulate space, materials, and style through exercises that focus on drawing and thinking and through demonstrations of the properties of assorted materials. Construct a model of your own dream structure and invite family and friends to see it on display at the final exhibition.

To broaden skills and exposure to the arts, Young Architects can be combined with Young Artists (updated!), Young Journalists, 3-D Video Game and Makers Lab Creations (new!), Code Breakers and App Designers, Creating Comic Books, Youth Musical Theatre, Young Actors, Young Photographers, the Songwriting Workshop, and/or Creative Vocal Lab to make for a well-rounded summer experience.

Session III: July 25–August 5
Monday–Friday, 9:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m.
$1,200 for the first registration
$1,080 for the second registration in the family, Purchase College employees and alumni, and early registrations (received by May 6, 2016)

About the Instructors

Tricia McDermott (lead instructor) holds degrees in history, education, and architecture from Manhattan College and the City University of New York and has taught elementary through college-level courses. Incorporating the built environments in educational explorations allows her students to develop their own understanding of how societies evolved through urban planning and structural design. More recently, Tricia worked for a local architectural firm as head of interior architecture, working primarily on educational and library projects.
