Young Architects

Grades 5–8

Typical Day

Sign in Location: Social Sciences Bldg., 2002

Develop ideas, plans, drawings, and models of your fantasy buildings using the Purchase College campus, with its varied contemporary examples of architecture and landscape, as inspiration. Learn how to manipulate space, materials, and style through exercises that focus on drawing and thinking and through demonstrations of the properties of assorted materials. Construct a model of your own dream structure and invite family and friends to see it on display at the final exhibition.

To broaden skills and exposure to the arts, Young Architects can be combined with Young Artists, Young Journalists (new!), Video Game Creators and Animators, Minecraft™ Designers and Modders, Creating Comic Books, Youth Musical Theatre, Young Actors, Young Photographers, the Songwriting Workshop, and/or Creative Vocal Lab to make for a well-rounded summer experience.

Session III: July 27–August 7
Monday–Friday, 9:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m.
$1,200 for the first registration
$1,080 for the second registration in the family, Purchase College employees and alumni, and early registrations (received by May 8, 2015)

About the Instructors

Tricia McDermott (lead instructor) holds degrees in History, Education, and Architecture from Manhattan College and the City University of New York and has taught elementary through college level courses. Incorporating the built environments in educational explorations allow her students to develop their own understanding of how societies evolved through urban planning and structural design. More recently Tricia worked for a local architectural firm as Head of Interior Architecture working primarily on educational and library projects.

Roberto Jamora (Instructor) is Brooklyn-based artist. He holds a BFA in Painting and Printmaking from Virginia Commonwealth University and a MFA in Visual Arts from Purchase College, State University of New York. His paintings are abstract and make reference to basketball, the beach, autobiographical markers, and movement. He has recently shown at Academic Gallery, Open Space, FJORD, and OUTLET Fine Art. He is currently an Emerging Artist-Teacher Fellow at the Joan Mitchell Foundation.
