Workshop Descriptions

MASTER WORKSHOPS: MORNING

Drawing and Painting
Using a wide range of media, including pen and ink, charcoal, watercolor, and acrylic paint, we investigate a variety of formal concerns—including the clothed figure, still life, and landscape. Emphasis is placed on drawing from life.

Sculpture
We explore the process of creating art in three dimensions by tackling projects in wood, wire, and plaster. Emphasis is placed on moving visual ideas from the two-dimensional to the three-dimensional realm.

ELECTIVE WORKSHOPS: AFTERNOON
On the registration form, select both a first and second choice of elective. Registration for electives is on a first-come, first served basis, so register early!

SVAIFigure Drawing
This workshop explores the human figure. Students analyze the figure’s form and structure through the use of a variety of media, including charcoal, ink, conté crayon, and color. Emphasis is placed on the student’s ability to observe and then record reality and relationships embedded within the human form. There is a nude model for this course.

Nontraditional Sculpture
This workshop explores how artists merge materials, process, and presentation in the act of contemporary art-making. Assignments are designed to expand the conceptual methods used by students in art production and to help students identify their specific interests so that the art they make can best reflect their individuality. Using a variety of traditional and alternative materials, students will make projects that include sculptural objects, installation art, and interactive art.

Digital Video Art
Focusing on technical and conceptual concerns, students will investigate the expressive possibilities of digital video art using a nonlinear editor to produce work that explores both the narrative and creative options of the medium. Experimentation with performance, installation, and ways of seeing will be encouraged as the class creates original single-channel videos for DVD. Students must provide their own miniDV video camera.

Printmaking: Monoprinting and Artist’s Book Workshop
A monoprint is a unique impression of ink transferred to paper from a plate upon which the image is painted. Monoprints are immediate, spontaneous, and accessible. Using the professional printmaking studio, students will learn and experience a variety of methods for creating monoprints as well as several book structures. Students will have the opportunity to explore their ideas in both a series of prints and an artist’s book.
