WHY TAKE THE BRIDGE?
The Liberal Studies B.A. Program is designed for graduates of Rockland Community College (RCC) and other students who would like to complete much of the required coursework for their B.A. degrees close to home in Rockland County during the evening. Students may choose one of three majors in the program:
In most cases, students may complete their B.A. degrees with two years of full-time study. Students can study on either a part-time or full-time basis. All courses are held on the Rockland campus, with the exception of the required Senior Capstone, which is offered on the Purchase College campus in Westchester County.
LIBERAL STUDIES
This interdisciplinary major helps students to develop an appreciation of the questions, issues, and perspectives underlying the liberal arts, to integrate knowledge across disciplines, and to be able to apply academic learning to life pursuits. Coursework is required in a variety of areas, and includes a cross-section of the humanities (e.g., history, philosophy, writing), social sciences (e.g., communications, legal studies, sociology), natural sciences (math, science, psychology), and the arts (e.g., art history, studio art, music). The flexibility of the liberal studies degree allows students to choose advanced courses that best suit their needs and interests.
LIBERAL STUDIES: COMMUNICATION/MEDIA STUDIES
This major helps students to gain a greater understanding of current politics and social structures through close examination of the centrality of the media in today’s global society. Courses cover historical, sociological, and psychological analyses of media, including film, television, and print, as well as visual and computer technologies
LIBERAL STUDIES: LEGAL STUDIES
By examining the social, political, and historical processes of law, students learn the ethical functions of the legal system and its implementation in society. Required core and elective coursework examines law through the lenses of sociology and political science, enabling students to appreciate the role of the judicial system within the broader social context.
THE RCC RELATIONSHIP
An articulation agreement between the two SUNY campuses, Purchase College and Rockland Community College, allows you to complete certain requirements at RCC. If you need to fulfill any lower-level credit requirements, you may do so at RCC and transfer them to Purchase College. In addition, if RCC offers a course required for your major, such as Legal Research or Introduction to Criminal Law (for Legal Studies), you can also take these courses at RCC and transfer them in.
You will work closely with an advisor to maximize the application of your transfer credits toward completion of your graduation requirements.
