About the Alexander Technique
A proven approach to self-care, the Alexander Technique is a method that people of all ages and abilities can learn to relieve the pain and stress caused by everyday misuse of the body. Learn to strip away the movement habits and tension patterns at the root of your discomfort. Balance your own body and take charge of your own health. Relearn how to sit, stand, and move—with safety, efficiency, and ease. Release muscular tension and restore your body’s original poise under the expert guidance of a professionally trained teacher. Especially beneficial for dancers, actors, athletes, musicians, artists, and writers.

*CANCELLED* Introduction to the Alexander Technique
Achieve a greater ease and more mindful use of your body! Using the principles of the Alexander Technique, learn to notice ingrained habits of movement and thinking. With guidance from a trained teacher, learn to change those habits and improve both posture and the overall use of your body. Wear comfortable clothes and bring a mat and journal to record the habits/changes noticed each week.

Alexander Technique: Movease
Experience the principles of the Alexander Technique combined with the mind/body centering, breathing, and subtle strengthening and stretch of yoga, and the coordination, spatial awareness, and balance of dance. Begin with simple movement explorations on the floor, gradually leading to standing and walking. Develop a deep, core strength and learn to move with ease and efficiency. For students of all abilities; wear fitness clothes and bring a yoga mat.

Alexander Technique: Chair Movease
Less flexible adults experience the principles of the Alexander Technique combined with the mind/body centering, breathing, and subtle strengthening and stretch of yoga, and the coordination, spatial awareness, and balance of dance. Begin with simple movement explorations in a chair that gradually lead to standing and walking. Develop a deep, core strength and learn to balance well and to walk with ease and efficiency. For students of all abilities; wear fitness clothes.


About the Instructor

Thomas Baird is a professional dancer, choreographer, and certified teacher of the Alexander Technique. He teaches Movement Styles for Singers in the Conservatory of Music at Purchase College and the Alexander Technique at The Juilliard School.
