Fundraising Communications
Cultivate positive communications in reports, site visits, and thank-you letters. Learn how and when to approach corporations and foundations for gifts and how to make your proposal stand out. Review materials typically produced by a development officer: newsletters, annual reports, brochures, annual appeals, and website content. Learn how to work with freelancers and printers.

Starting a Development Program
Understand the roles of the nonprofit board, executive director, and development director in establishing and attaining development goals. Address the major concepts of the fundraising pyramid, the giving cycle, and charitable giving standards. Examine ethics and laws addressing the nonprofit responsibility in protecting donor interests, respecting the intent of their gifts, and accountability to donors and the public. Understand the composition and duties of nonprofit boards. Learn how strategic plans and development plans are interrelated.

Grant/Proposal Writing
Learn to research and write proposals that get funded. Explore relevant funding sources: corporate, foundation, and government. Construct coherent proposals by creating effective cover sheets, narratives, background pages, and both stakeholder and third-party evaluation plans. Discover the most efficient research methods. Examine the criteria that funders use to determine whether grant proposals are funded or rejected.

The Principles of Fundraising
Address various approaches to fundraising for the nonprofit organization, including the annual giving campaign, special events, major gift solicitation, planned giving options, capital campaigns, and donor recognition. Learn techniques to develop and manage volunteer programs. Obtain practical guidelines for identifying potential donors, handling the “ask” meeting, providing donor recognition, and utilizing your board effectively. Become familiar with various types of life income gifts and understand the interests of the major players: prospect, development office, financial planner, attorney, accountant, and bank.
