About the Certificate Program

Explore traditional and modern drawing concepts, including gesture, contour, relational technique, value, and composition. Learn the fundamental aspects of painting and visual form, including color theory, thematic development, composition, palette and canvas preparation, and painting media and techniques. Students may choose to supplement the required courses with additional drawing and painting studio courses and courses in art history.

Earn your noncredit certificate in four semesters. Students may take individual courses without commitment to the entire program. Students who successfully complete the four required courses are awarded a certificate by the School of Liberal Studies & Continuing Education, reflecting 24 continuing education units (CEUs).

Note: Certificate programs must be completed within three years unless approved by the director of continuing education.

To qualify for the certificate, students must:

  1. submit a Certificate Form of Intent
  2. achieve a “Pass” designation in coursework from the instructors
  3. submit a Certificate Request Form after all requirements have been met
  4. submit a Professional Certificate Program Survey

Required Courses:

  • Two semesters of Fundamentals of Painting (formerly Painting I and II )
  • Two semesters of Life Drawing (formerly Life Drawing I and II)

Optional Studio Courses:

  1. Drawing From Nature
  2. Painting From Art History

Optional Art History Courses:

  1. Introduction to Modern Art
  2. Picasso: The Man, His Art, and His Critics
  3. Contemporary Art
  4. American Art
  5. Impressionism
  6. Art of the ’80s, ’90s, and 21st Century

Costs
All courses are available on a noncredit basis at a reduced tuition rate, plus applicable fees. In addition to the tuition, there is a $25 nonrefundable registration fee paid once per semester. The courses in this program are not eligible for any tuition discounts.

Note: The noncredit option is limited to students who are not enrolled in a degree program at Purchase College. Students who register for the noncredit option do not receive college credit or grades.
