Conservatory of Music:
Studio Composition

Bachelor of Music in Studio Composition

Updates to the 2008–2010 Purchase College Catalog:

12/11/09 update, effective Fall 2010—senior year:

  • In the fall, MTH 2230 replaces MUS 1000/World Music Survey; an arts management elective (3–4 credits) replaces a 2-credit music elective; and a 2-credit music elective is added as an option to MTH 4450/The Business of Music.
  • In the spring, music electives are increased from 2 to 4 credits.

12/22/08 update, effective Spring 2009:

  • The MCO 1410 requirement has been reduced from eight to four semesters, and is graded on a pass/no credit basis. It is highly recommended that the four semesters of MCO 1410 be taken in the first two years. Students may choose to take more than four semesters of MCO 1410 on an elective basis.
  • The music electives in the senior year (fall and spring) have been changed from 1.5 to 2 credits each.
  • These changes reduce the credit total for the major to 96 (from 99–100). Of these, 90 are professional credits (formerly 93–94).

In addition to meeting general degree requirements, undergraduate studio composition majors must complete the following Conservatory requirements (99–100 credits), as outlined below by semester and year.

  • Of the 99–100 credits, up to 8 credits of music history can be counted toward the 30-credit liberal arts requirement for the Mus.B. degree.
  • The following courses also satisfy three core curriculum requirements: MTH 2510 (Other World Civilizations); MTH 2520 (Humanities); and MCO 1010, 1020, 2010, 2020, 3020, or 3030 (Natural Science).
