Conservatory of Music:

The Piano Program

At Purchase, we believe we can offer the young pianist a truly unique opportunity. In the Conservatory of Music, the pianist has the benefits of quiet, intense study in a peaceful, country setting, as well as the advantages of being only 35 minutes from the premiere concert city in the world, New York. We believe that by offering the young pianist world-class teaching, first-rate practice facilities, extensive performance opportunities, and an excellent chamber music faculty, we can give each young pianist the opportunity to develop his or her talent and special abilities to the utmost.

Apply for Admission

One of the most important considerations for a serious young pianist is choosing a school that provides excellent and unlimited practice time. One of the greatest benefits for such a young pianist considering the piano program at Purchase is the practice situation, which is the finest of any school in the New York area.

We have 15 practice rooms designated solely for pianists, all with Steinway Model B Grands. Each pianist has a key to these rooms. In addition, there are approximately 25 other practice rooms, most with Steinway Grands, designated for general use. Any pianist who wishes to have a key to these rooms may do so.

Performance opportunities are virtually unlimited at Purchase. Students regularly perform solo recitals in the Recital Hall, which is renowned for its superb acoustics and has two Steinway concert grands and a Bosendorfer Imperial Grand. The piano program presents four recitals each year, two at the Recital Hall and two at the world-renowned Performing Arts Center on campus. Students are selected to perform in these recitals by the faculty.

The conservatory presents several chamber music concerts and contemporary ensemble performances each semester. In addition, the conservatory hosts an annual Concerto Competition, the winner of which performs with the Purchase Symphony Orchestra. All performances are recorded by our first-class studio engineers, and any pianist who wishes may receive a CD of any performance.

We are known for our reasonable tuition rates and are pleased to be able to offer very generous scholarships to deserving pianists. These scholarships are based both on auditions and on the needs of particular students.
