The Percussion Program
The Conservatory of Music offers the student percussionist one of the best well-rounded educational experiences in the nation. By providing the young percussionist with world-class instruction, first-rate practice facilities and extensive performance opportunities, we give each student the opportunity to develop his or her talent and special abilities to the utmost.
Student Life and Culture
In the peaceful surroundings of Westchester County, our students have the advantage of intense musical study in a safe and nurturing environment with the benefit of being only 35 minutes from New York City, the premiere performance city in the world. On campus, we are fortunate to have both the Performing Arts Center (home of the Purchase Symphony Orchestra and Purchase Opera) and the Neuberger Museum of Art.
There are numerous performance opportunities available to the student percussionist at Purchase College. Performance groups include the Purchase Percussion Ensemble, Purchase Contemporary Ensemble, Purchase Sinfonietta, Purchase Symphony Orchestra, Purchase Opera and Purchase Symphonic Winds. There are also opportunities to collaborate with the Conservatories of Dance and Theatre Arts. Juniors and seniors are required to perform solo recitals and all students are encouraged to produce their own projects. In addition, our students participate in the annual Purchase College Day of Percussion, which features world-class clinicians and many concerts. Off-campus performance opportunities include concerts and percussion festivals in New York City and the tri-state area.
One of the most important considerations for a serious young percussionist is choosing a school that provides excellent facilities and equipment. The percussion facilities at Purchase are among the best of any school in the New York area. The Percussion Suite consists of six private practice rooms exclusively for the use of the percussion program. In addition, ensemble rehearsals take place in the huge Percussion Ensemble Rehearsal Room. The school owns a vast array of percussion instruments and continually expands and updates the collection.
All concerts and recitals take place in either the Conservatory of Music Recital Hall, which is renowned for its superb acoustics, or in one of the world-class performing spaces in the Performing Arts Center. In addition Purchase College is home to state-of-the-art digital recording studios.
