Conservatory of Music:

The Percussion Program

The Conservatory of Music is proud to offer the student percussionist one of the best well-rounded educational experiences in the nation. We believe that by offering the young percussionist world-class teaching, first-rate practice facilities, extensive performance opportunities, and an excellent chamber music faculty, we can give each young percussionist the opportunity to develop his or her talent and special abilities to the utmost.

Student Life and Culture
At Purchase, we offer the young percussionist a truly unique opportunity. In our conservatory, the percussionist has the benefits of quiet, intense study in a peaceful country setting and the advantages of being only 35 minutes from the premiere performance city in the world, New York.

Performance Opportunities
Opportunities to perform are many for the student percussionist at Purchase. Performance groups in the conservatory include the Percussion Ensemble, Contemporary Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, and Wind and Brass Ensembles. In addition, there are opportunities to collaborate with the Conservatories of Dance and Theatre Arts. Students are required to perform solo recitals and are encouraged to produce their own projects. All performances are recorded by the conservatory’s first-class studio engineers, and any percussionist who wishes may receive a CD of any performance.

Off-campus performance opportunities include the annual Percussion Ensemble tour of New York State and performances at events like the Percussive Arts Society’s annual “Day of Percussion.”

One of the most important considerations for a serious young percussionist is choosing a school that provides excellent facilities and equipment. The percussion facilities at Purchase are among the most outstanding of any school in the New York area. The Percussion Suite consists of six private practice rooms exclusively for the use of the percussion program. In addition, rehearsals take place in the huge Percussion Ensemble Rehearsal Room. The conservatory owns a vast array of instruments, including four marimbas (including a bass marimba), two vibraphones, three sets of timpani (including two sets of Ringer timpani), three xylophones, three sets of chimes, and much, much more.

All concerts and recitals take place in either the conservatory’s Recital Hall, which is renowned for its superb acoustics, or in one of the world-class performing spaces in the Performing Arts Center on campus.

We are known for our reasonable tuition rates and are pleased to be able to offer very generous scholarships to deserving percussionists. These scholarships are based both on auditions and on the needs of particular students.
