Updates to the 2008–2010 Purchase College Catalog:

12/11/09 update, effective Fall 2010:

  • The Midpoint Assessment (MPE 0311, 0 credit) is no longer required (sophomore, spring).
  • A 2-credit music elective replaces MTH 4450/The Business of Music in the senior year (fall).

7/21/08 update, effective Fall 2008—junior and senior years:

  • MPE 1480 has been changed from 1.5 to 2 credits (x 4 semesters)
  • MUS 1000 has been replaced by MTH 2230 (junior year/fall)
  • MTH 3460 (senior year/fall, 2 credits) has been deleted
  • The credit total remains unchanged: 99 credits, 91 of which are professional credits

5/15/09 update, effective Fall 2009:

  • MCO 1015 and 1025 (Jazz Theory I and II) replace MCO 1010 and 1020 (Models I and II) for jazz studies students.

1/07/09 update, effective Spring 2009:

  • MUS 1000 (World Music Survey) is no longer required for the major. (It was formerly required in the first semester of the senior year.) This reduces the credit total for the major to 100 (from 102). Of these, 94 are professional credits (reduced from 96).


In addition to meeting general degree requirements, undergraduate jazz studies majors must complete the following Conservatory requirements (100 credits), as outlined below by semester and year.

  • Of the 100 credits, up to 8 credits of music history can be counted toward the 30-credit liberal arts requirement for the Mus.B. degree.
  • The following courses also satisfy two core curriculum requirements: MTH 2510 (Other World Civilizations) and MTH 2520 (Humanities).
