For a young singer to compete at the highest level of singing, they must develop good vocal skills that create a beautiful yet reliable, marketable sound. The challenges of utilizing a solid vocal technique and portraying dramatic text on the stage allow a student to create his or her own individual sound and expressive uniqueness for the operatic and concert stage.
I require that my students also develop high linguistic and stylistic skills, and build aria and song repertoire from the Baroque period to the present. At Purchase College, students achieve these basic tenets at the undergraduate level. Our students are then ready to compete very successfully in their postgraduate and young artist programs upon graduation.
