A conservatory education ought to be...

  • conservative in instilling discipline, mental toughness, a technique that reliably avoids distracting listeners from the intended message, and a thorough knowledge of the repertoire and its theory and history.
     
  • liberal in inculcating a reverence for the masterworks, in nurturing a sense that it is a privilege to be a musician, and in encouraging patience, conviviality, and an awareness that there are a great many good ways to interpret music.
     
  • radical in giving students the space to realize that the future belongs to them, and that no music-making is worth listening to if it doesn’t passionately communicate the performer’s life in the living of it, whether within the vehicle of an old masterwork, or in some new form.
