My teaching philosophy is based on a full understanding of jazz improvisation through the knowledge of harmony, scales, patterns, melodic line, and rhythm. During the past decade, many workbooks have been written on improvisation, but I strongly believe that the student must go directly to the source (Charlie Parker, Monk, Miles Davis, Coltrane, etc.). I stress listening to the classic recordings of jazz and developing the ears of young musicians through transcriptions, solf├Ęge, and class participation.
