Conservatory of Music:
woodwinds

The Woodwind Program

The woodwind student in the Conservatory of Music at Purchase College benefits from a faculty of extraordinary artists and abundant facilities in an atmosphere of high musical standards. The wind faculty, as well as the whole faculty in the conservatory, is made up of actively performing artists who are very sought after in their field. The curriculum of both the undergraduate and graduate programs includes exposure and performance opportunities in chamber music, new music, early music, and orchestral repertoire, in addition to the students’ intense focus on solo repertoire.

Program
The woodwind program in the Conservatory of Music encompasses flute, oboe, clarinet, and bassoon. The undergraduate instrumental performance major with a concentration in woodwinds leads to the Bachelor of Music degree, and a three programs are offered for graduate students: a Master of Music, Artist Diploma, and Performers Certificate. In addition to private lessons, all woodwind students participate in the Purchase Symphony Orchestra, which presents orchestral concerts, a ballet production, and an opera each year. In addition to the orchestral experience, students perform in chamber music ensembles each semester, which are coached once a week by a member of our esteemed faculty. Students give recitals and perform in ensembles and master classes given by visiting artists throughout the year. There is also extensive, in-depth work in ear training, music theory, and music history and, at the undergraduate level, a required component of liberal arts general education. The Conservatory of Music prides itself on its supportive, collegial atmosphere and its detailed attention to the progress and development of each student.

Many of these artists give master classes and open rehearsals for our students.
