George Kraemer

Ph.D. George Kraemer
Environmental Studies and Biology

I’ve had both big university and small college experiences and, I see the smaller environment of a liberal arts college as the clear choice.  This was part of my decision to accept the job that Purchase College offered 10 years ago.

I know my students – just ask them – and they know they can always find me if they have questions about class work, help planning their program of study, or suggestions for internships or study abroad.  I have some great students.  That’s why my door is always open.

My professional research has taken me to parts of the world I wouldn’t have been able to see otherwise.

I rely on these experiences to extend my teaching beyond the textbook.  I try to involve my students in my research because classroom learning is best cemented by the hands-on practice of science.

I believe that my teaching also benefits from a broad interest in many things.  When I look back, I see I could easily have studied physics, literature, or history, instead of ecology and environmental science.  I am still trying to develop a course that somehow integrates the history of pirates, the physics governing tall-masted sailing ships, and the environment!
