FLEXIBILITY IN STUDYING
Many schools limit their students to one concentrated area, whereas Purchase’s Interdisciplinary major allows me to investigate multiple media. I’m an Interdisciplinary artist in the School of Art+Design studying Painting/Drawing and Printmaking, so I can’t rely on one way of making art to satisfy what I want to convey. My passions for art, justice, and spirituality influence one another as I pursue them daily. I want my work not only to highlight social issues such as poverty and immigration, but also to serve as the voice of the unheard, and inspire people to change the world around them. Purchase has given me the necessary platform from which to accomplish these goals.
In my Painting I course with Professor Leah Montalto, I have learned to manage color and paint photo-realistically. How do you portray light? How does the eye perceive color? My classes, both studio and academic, have thus widened my understanding of my art’s place. I can see colors now and mix them in a way that I could not before. Whenever I hear something that stirs something else within me, I write it down, or if I see something that moves me, then I investigate it. As an artist I see a world full of wonder and excitement waiting to be conveyed.
The Neuberger Museum of Art is like a window into the outside world. Every time I go into the museum, I come out enlightened and inspired to produce more art. One can always take something from what they see in a museum, and to have one on campus is a privilege.
CAMPUS RHYTHMS
As a freshman, I feel like my professors have helped transition me from child to adult by trusting me with my own voice and to reach higher and higher. I want to do urban education and Global Missions through art in the future, and Purchase offers me the freedom as an artist to explore my options and prepare me for whatever comes in the future.
I feel like I stand out from amongst the crowd because I don’t move according to the rhythm set by people; rather, I seek to harmonize with the beat set from the very beginning by God himself. I’m very involved with the Christian group on campus and also with several activist groups, all of which practice justice. People grow accustomed to the status quo, and I refuse to conform to its image. I love what I do and when I see that someone else has passion for what they do, then we begin to sharpen each other and have this conversation that may lead to something amazing.
LOCATION, LOCATION . . .
The location of the school also did it for me; it only makes sense for an artist to have easy access to NYC! But I like how it is also separated from Manhattan and White Plains. My school offers me the space and fresh air to pursue my endeavors at ease and with a clear mind. The campus is a mystery unto itself with hidden forests and stone walls—a bit of paradise really, a mecca of art in a random spot. It’s fun to take walks and disappear and just think. I can flesh out my discoveries and experiences into something more than just a memory. That then becomes my art. This is a beautiful place to create, I must say.
