DIVERSITY INITIATIVES COMMITTEE
Minutes for 3/10/06 Meeting
Attending: Peter LaMantia, Sandy Garcia, Tara Blackwell, Melissa Ghafoor and Jeff Stein
Chair: Jay Alt
The meeting was called to order at 1:10pm.
- Jay shared that the committee is still not at full membership yet. 3 faculty members still need to be added. No timeline for completing this task has been set but he did request recommendations from the group.
- Jay conducted a presentation on how other institutions utilize their websites to demonstrate the high level of priority that diversity is to their particular campus. Texas A&M, Arizona, Hamline, Illinois State and Maryland were shown as each had a direct link either on the main site or one click from it that outlined the various types of services and programs offered that promoted and maintained a strong commitment to diversity appreciation and education. Additionally, Macalester’s site was shown to illustrate the types of programs and services that come from a strong multicultural life department.
- Jay and Jeff shared that the next College Senate meeting would be another big opportunity for a push to have this committee be recognized by it as a standing committee, a move that would strengthen the potential of the committee.
- Jay shared that as this committee gains its focus and defines its objectives, it is most important that it not be seen as a “response” or a reaction to the recent incident involving PTV. This committee was long in discussion prior to these recent happenings.
The meeting was adjourned at 2:10pm.
