Description: The Director of The Performing Arts Center will be an entrepreneur and visionary who will provide the leadership, direction, and management necessary to take The Performing Arts Center to its full potential as an exciting multi-disciplinary cultural institution known for its high quality programming, which attracts wide and diverse audiences from the campus community and the greater Westchester/Fairfield region, and also connects to the academic mission of Purchase College.  The Director will be responsible for The Center’s artistic vision and financial viability, and will manage its day-to-day operations and activities, including programming, finances, marketing, operations and development. 

Reporting to the Provost of Purchase College, while working closely and collaboratively with the dynamic and growing Board of The Performing Arts Center Foundation, the Director will ensure that The Center and its programming attract significant levels of financial and audience support throughout the region.  The Director will also be expected to work collaboratively with the Deans and faculty of The School of the Arts, the Director of The Neuberger Museum of Art, and other academic deans to develop programming and other initiatives, in conjunction with the academic curriculum, which will engage and excite students.  In partnership with the College, the Board and other stakeholders, the Director will provide creative and innovative leadership for the continued enhancement of The Center’s programmatic, educational and community engagement activities consistent with its mission.

The successful candidate must be a creative, dynamic and visionary leader with an intuitive business sense, demonstrated management, external relations and communication skills.  The Director should have a strong interest in and passion for developing a collaborative working relationship between The Center and the College’s academic departments.

The ideal candidate will also: have a strong commitment to and understanding of artistic excellence, with a minimum of 10 years experience in successively responsible positions, culminating in demonstrated success as a senior executive within a performing arts institution of relevant size and complexity, preferably on a college or university campus or in an institution with strong educational programming; have a track record for leading, managing and developing a team, a firm understanding of management processes and proactive community building skills; possess sound financial skills, including budgeting, planning and analysis, preferably in an institution with complex finances and multiple sources of support; have a strong commitment to interactive arts education and campus outreach and an understanding of how to successfully integrate such projects as part of The Center’s mission within the College; demonstrate the ability to provide quality programming that spans classical, jazz and popular music, dance, theatre, film and spoken word programs; demonstrate the ability to offer these programs within budget; demonstrate successful fundraising ability, including the cultivation and solicitation of foundation, corporate and individual donors; and have strong leadership and communication skills, including a clear ability to encourage and energize staff, peers, artists, donors and audiences.
