Campus Technology Services

Campus Technology Services (CTS) provides information technology facilities, services and support for the entire College community.

Classroom Technology Services: CTS manages and operates a variety of Smart Classrooms, Computer Labs, and portable equipment (Computer/Projector) that can be reserved for classes, meetings or events as needed. Most classrooms already contain a stationary TV/DVD/VCR.

Videoconferencing and Webcasting: CTS also provides internet-based videoconferencing and Webcasting services that can be used for classes, meetings or events. please contact CTS at x6465 for morte infromation.

Residential Network Service (ResNet): CTS provides data network and computing support services for all 2,500 campus residents through ResNet with two fast ethernet ports in each room.

Administrative Computing Services: CTS provides a variety of web-based self-service administrative applications for faculty including class lists, grading and other key services. Each class section has its own email listserve, as do each Board of Study and each academic division. A complete list of services is on the Faculty Staff Portal page.

Telephone and Voice Mail: CTS provides telephone, voice mail, and unified messaging services to all faculty and staff offices, and to all residential rooms on campus.CTS also highly recommends that you sign up for Unified Messaging, which forwards your campus voice mail to your email account as sound files, making is easy to manage your voice messages from anywhere you have Internet access. Faculty and Staff must read and acknowledge the College Telephone Policy.

CTS provides Email accounts for all Purchase College faculty, staff and students. Email accounts for students are created automatically upon enrollment, and can be activated on the web at home.purchase.edu. Faculty and staff email accounts are created as soon as  you get your More Card ID card, and can also be activated online through the website.

The CTS Helpdesk offers technical support for any computer, networking, software and communications problems to students, faculty and staff.

Wireless Ethernet access (802.11b/g) is available in many areas of the campus including the A+D Building, Music, Natural Sciences, Humanities, Social Sciences, the Library, CCN, CCS, and in the Commons residential complex. CTS continues to work to expand this convenience service throughout the campus. Since Wireless Ethernet operates on an unregulated radio frequency (shared with cordless phones, microwave ovens, etc), no guarantees of service are possible.

Social Networking: the College has its own Wiki and Blog tool, http:\\planet.purchase.edu   that can be used by any member of the Purchase College Community (it requires a Purchase ID). The College has also purchased an island in Second Life, and is working to establish a public presence there. In the meantime, Purchase faculty and students are welcome to use the island's sandbox for experimentation in this exciting new environment.

Internet Service: The College has one full and one partial T3 Internet connections totalling 65mbps. Internet traffic is shaped and prioritized to prevent any one type of traffic from overwhelming other types of traffic. No traffic is blocked entirely. If you find that your online game or console is not working properly, it may be that a particular obscure port has to be opened - we have covered most popular games and consoles already, but this is ever-shifting terrain. To protect the college community from cyber-threats, unused ports are disabled.
