Crime Prevention

University Police conduct personal safety workshops for our incoming freshmen and transfer students. Topics covered include rape awareness, sexual assault prevention, locking of doors at all times, individual vigilance and Operation ID.

Emergency Telephones (EBLPS):  In addition to a telephone(s) in each student's room, there are 40 outdoor "blue light" emergency phones strategically located throughout the campus.  These "blue light" phones are directly connected to the University Police Communications Office. Additional sites are being considered for additional outdoor emergency telephones.

How can I protect my personal property?

OPERATION IDENTIFICATION PROGRAM

The Operation Identification Program is very effective. All of your valuables that can easily be stolen are personally marked in the event that they can be identified as yours.

The idea is based on the fact that marked valuables are very hard for the burglar to dispose of, and they can be traced back to you. In addition, if the burglar is caught with them in his possession, the marked valuables constitute solid evidence of possession of stolen goods.

The marking you should use is personal to you (birthdate, etc)

This number is part of your college record and vill identify ownership of lost, found, or stolen property.

WHY SHOULD I HAVE MY VALUABLES MARKED?

No one is immune to theft. However, participation in the Identification Program reduces the chance of then because stolen items are much more difficult to dispose of if they have been marked. Burglars know this and are hesitant to enter residences that participate in an Identification Program. If marked items are stolen and recovered, it is very easy to identify the rightful owners and return the property to them. Participation in this program will cost only thirty minutes of your time. And could save you much time, trouble and expense.

HOW DO I PARTICIPATE IN THE PROGRAM?

Come to the University Police Department, Humanities 0053 with your valid Student ID card or your valid Driver's License which you will leave at the department in exchange for the engraver to engrave the #'s into your items. After marking your items, you will write down all brand names, model numbers, serial numbers and your ID number and give the information to the University Police where they will keep the information stored on cards. What should I mark? Anything that is easily stolen should be marked. For instance: Television sets Stereo Equipment Radios Cameras Auto Tape Decks Watches Typewriters Computers/Laptops Bicycles and any other items you deem valuable and easily stolen. You would be surprised how easily some of the heaviest items you may have can be stolen.

NOW THAT MY PROPERTY IS MARKED, WHAT ELSE CAN I DO?

We can not stress enough how important it is to safeguard all your property. No one Is immune to theft. But by participating in the Identification Program you have lessened the possibility of suffering a burglary. You can reduce the risk of becoming a victim if students, faculty and staff , safeguard their personal property.   First by locking your doors and securing your property.

Secondly, Purchase College participates in Operation ID. An engraver is available for your use to inscribe your ID number on your valuable personal property. A record will be kept of your inscribed items and will be useful to aid you in getting back lost or stolen property. Money, jewelry, laptop computers and other valuables should be safeguarded at all times. Report all missing valuables to the University Police as soon as possible.

Access:

Students, faculty and staff at Purchase College have access to academic, recreational and administrative facilities on campus. Access to the residence halls, however, is limited to residents and their guests, according to Residence Life policy. Access to residence halls by college employees is on an "as needed" basis and incorporates strict key control procedures through Facilities Management, Resident Life and University Police. The general public can attend cultural and recreational events on campus, with their access limited only to the facilities in which these events are held.

College ID card:

All students, faculty and staff must be in possession of a valid Purchase College ID card and must produce it when requested by a University Police officer or any other College official. ID cards are issued at the Campus Center North More Card Office, (call 251-6330 for hours).
