Purchase, NY (Nov. 16, 2009) – It was hard to tell that the Purchase College men’s golf team was in its first season as a varsity sport.
That’s how well they performed. Debut seasons for any new team have very low expectations. What’s expected is often anywhere from last place finishes to its share of blowout defeats. But the team did more than hold their own to thwart those low expectations.
After years of development, the Panthers went from a club team to a varsity sport in fall 2009.
Of the team’s seven matches, they compiled five Top 5 finishes, including a silver showing while hosting the first ever Purchase Invitational in late September. Ben Potter shined the brightest for the Panthers this year. He was named Skyline Conference Rookie of the Year and was an All-Skyline Second Team selection, joining teammate Matt Steinbach.

The roster will only graduate three golfers this year, including Potter, but will retain captain Ryan Ekey. In addition to the expected return of Ekey, the Panthers will also welcome back one of their top performers in Steinbach. Steinbach led the Panthers in three of their matches and was runner-up in another two.
With golf now in the fold at Purchase, head coach Andrew Farrell believes more recruits will flock to the growing program. “We did a great job this season and are expecting even better results next fall,” he said.
