Library Services for Faculty

Instructional Services

Instruction Tailored to Your Classes
We offer research instruction tailored specifically for any class, including introducing students to subject-specific resources. We also can help students understand how to evaluate information, which is particularly important now that they're faced with so much information on the web. And, we can help them learn how to distinguish scholarly sources from other sources. Contact your library subject liaison or our Ask A Librarian service.
 -----------------------------------------------------------
Creating Effective Research Assignments
We can help you assess whether assignments are well-matched with the resources available. We can help you create assignments that will enable students to learn the research process.  We also have ready-made assignments that you can drop into your courses.  See our assignment bank
 -----------------------------------------------------------
Resource Pages Tailored to Your Class
We can create resources guides for your classes, that you can make available in Moodle.  Pages like this will allow students to link directly into resources (databases, websites, books, etc.) that are most relevant to your classes. We also can create print handouts of relevant resources. Contact your library subject liaison or our Ask Us 24/7 service.
  -----------------------------------------------------------
General Library Handouts
Please feel free to print copies of the following handouts for you and your students, or feel free to post them on Blackboard:
 -----------------------------------------------------------
Library Workshops for Faculty & Staff
The Library works with TLTC to present workshops on topics such as RefWorks, Database Searching Using 360 Search, Social Networking Tools, PowerPoint, and the Turning Point Clicker System. These workshops are part of the Purchase College Professional Development Program, co-sponsored by UUP, the Purchase College Library, TLTC, and CTS. For Library workshop descriptions, dates, and RSVP links, see the TLTC Workshops Page.
  -----------------------------------------------------------
Faculty Research Consultations
Our subject specialist librarians would be happy to help you with your research. We can guide you toward resources or help you track down a difficult-to-find paper. Use our Ask Us 24/7 service or contact your subject specialist librarian.
  -----------------------------------------------------------
BOS or Group Faculty Workshops
A librarian can lead a session about new and existing resources of particular interest to a BOS or group of faculty. These sessions can be as long or as short as you would like. Contact your library subject liaison or our Ask A Librarian service.

Subject Liaison Librarians

We have librarians who specialize in different subjects. They can help you with research, instruction and any other questions you might have. See our subject liaison list to determine which librarian covers your area.

Course Reserves & Class Film Screenings

Check out our NEW Course Reserves procedures

Class Film Screenings

Items requested using the new procedures above will be available to pick up from the library circulation desk beginning 3 days before the screening date. If you need special arrangements, please ask us at libcirc@purchase.edu or X6410.

Please note that all classrooms in Humanities and SS have been equipped with stationary TV/DVD/VCR equipment, and you may not need to make any special arrangements for equipment. Many other academic divisions provide their own AV equipment. If you think you may need equipment to show the film in your classroom, please contact CTS at x6465 or helpdesk@purchase.edu.

If you would like to show a film that the Library does not own, please see Requesting Materials.

Moodle

The Teaching, Learning, and Technology Center (TLTC) offers Moodle, a course management system, to facilitate communication between faculty and students. Through Moodle instructors can post readings, set up discussion boards, post grades, give quizzes, and more. Please contact the TLTC tltc@purchase.edu for more information about Moodle.

Access Research Materials

Find Books, DVDs, CDs, etc.
Search the Purchase College Library Catalog.
 -----------------------------------------------------------
Find Articles
To find journal, magazine, or newspaper articles, see our Finding Articles page.
 -----------------------------------------------------------
Access from Anywhere at Any Time
You can access our resources from any computer with internet access. If you're asked for a username and password, your username is your firstname.lastname (NO @purchase.edu) and your password is your Purchase College email password. For help with this see our Off-Campus Access page.

Interlibrary Loan (ILLiad)

If you would like an item (book, article, etc.) that the Purchase College Library does not own, we can help you get it from another library. We offer the online ILLiad system to request materials, and often these materials can be delivered electronically in a few days. The first time you use the system, follow the link for first time users to sign up. Your logon is valid as long as you are with us at Purchase.  You’ll need your MORE card to complete the registration.

We can also help you determine if a local library has what you need.  Purchase faculty have borrowing privileges at academic libraries in Westchester - we can give you a sticker for your ID. And, we can provide passes for you to visit other academic libraries in the NY area. Contact your library subject liaison or use our Ask Us 24/7 service for more information.

RefWorks (Reference Management and Bibliography Tool)

We offer RefWorks, an online research management, writing and collaboration tool that is designed to help researchers easily gather, manage, store and share all types of information, as well as generate citations and bibliographies. You must register for RefWorks before you can begin using it. Click on Sign Up for an Individual Account. Enter the appropriate information and click on Register. For off-campus access, see the email sent to you when you registered (to get the group code), or email our Ask Us 24/7 Service. For more assistance, see the RefWorks Tutorial.

Slide Collection & Visual Resources

If you’ve ever wanted to teach digitally or use digital images in your classes, the library’s Visual Resources Collection is a great resource. We scan images for lectures and presentations in addition to locating and retrieving images in digital archives.

Our mission is to help faculty, students, and staff in all areas of the college. Whether you need help with one lecture or an entire course, we’re here to aid beginners and those already familiar with technology.

If you have a project in mind, or simply have questions about how to get started, please contact Heather Saunders, Art Librarian, at 914-251-6406 or heather.saunders@purchase.edu. For more information, please see: https://www.purchase.edu/departments/Library/collections/slidecollection.aspx

Request Materials for the Library

To request materials you think the library should have (books, DVDs, etc.) please contact your subject specialist librarian or email us through our Ask Us 24/7 service.

Schedule a Lab in the Library

To schedule a computer lab in the library for a class that you will be leading (NOT a librarian-led session), use the CTS Reservation Management System. For librarian-led sessions, we will take care of room scheduling.

Faculty Web Pages

For information on creating your faculty web page, please see the Teaching, Learning and Technology Center (TLTC) Faculty Web Page Information Page.

Assistive Technology Room

The Library houses the Assistive Technology room, which is intended to offer greater access to equipment needed by those students who are learning disabled, hearing and/or visually impaired. Library personnel are not trained in the use of this equipment. All users are expected to seek out training from the Counseling Center or a peer mentor recommended by the Counseling Center. For more information see the Assistive Technology Room page.
