Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the College Learning Center?

Student Services Building, 2nd floor Room 213

When are the Learning Centers open?

Monday - Thursday: 11 am - 5 pm
Friday: 11 am - 3 pm
Other hours by Appointment.

The Learning Center opens their study space for use during the first week of classes in each semester. Course review sessions (group and individual) begin during the second week of classes.  The Learning Center is closed during College breaks.

How do I know when a tutor will be available?

Simply stop by The Learning Center or call 914.251.3997 to schedule a tutoring session.

What happens during a tutoring session?

Our tutors do not deliver prepared lesson plans or lectures nor do they write papers for tutees. You can, however, expect your tutor to be knowledgeable about your subject and help you to comprehend the material.  If attending a writing tutoring session, our tutors can help you with any phase of your writing from brainstorming for topics to revising a written paper.

Is there a cost for tutoring services?

No. Services of the Learning Center are free of charge for Purchase students.

Why don't you provide tutoring in the Natural Sciences?

Due to a large grant to our Natural Sciences Department, Purchase was able to create the Einstein Corner.  This office provides tutoring in Math, Chemistry, Psychology, Biology, and other sciences, but only to Natural Sciences majors.  The Einstein Corner is located on the third floor of the Natural Sciences building.  The Learning Center does offer tutoring in math proficiency.  Also, Smarthinking.com provides "live" tutorial sessions in the areas of biology, chemistry, math, and physics.  This service will be available through Blackboard beginning September 30th.

What can I do if I am busy during the times a subject is offered for tutoring?

Many of our subjects are tutored by more than one tutor,  and thus the hours provide ample possibility for students to find a time that fits into their schedule. If your schedule does not permit you to utilize our services during office hours, we do make appointments outside of these to benefit all students.

If I'm doing well in class, can the Learning Center help me do even better?

Absolutely! The Learning Center isdesigned to assist both students who are having difficulty in a course as well as those who are doing well, but would like to further improve their performance.

How well qualified are the tutors?

Tutors undergo a stringent application and review process prior to being hired at the Learning Center. All tutors have met our academic criteria, have come highly recommended by faculty and/or administrators here at Purchase, and have excelled in the courses for which they tutor. In addition, all Tutors undergo training throughout the duration of their employment.
