English as a Second Language (ESL):
All students at Purchase College must demonstrate mastery of the English language before they graduate from Purchase College.
International applicants whose native language is not English must also request that the College Board send an official report score showing the results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) directly to the Office of Admissions.
Unless students have completed two semesters of English composition in the United States with a grade of B or better they will be asked to take a placement test upon arrival at Purchase.
Some students may be placed in an English as a Second Language (ESL) class (Level I or II) or may be directed to take College Writing for International Students. These courses are designed to enable students to successfully complete their course of study at Purchase. They target integrated skills with an emphasis on writing.
More detail about English language requirements and ESL can be found on the Admission Page or in the College Catalog
Occasionally, some students may be directed to take a summer intensive ESL course at an area college prior to starting at Purchase. Admissions should be contacted for recommended programs.
