Annual Fund

The Annual Fund provides the sole source of critical unrestricted support to channel funding to the College's most urgent needs that directly benefit students and the quality of their educational experience both inside and outside the classrom.  The Annual Fund is made possible by gifts from alumni, parents, faculty/staff, and friends.  Students, faculty, staff, alumni, and parents benefit from gifts made to Purchase. The fund ensures quality of education and access for students who face financial challenges.  Faculty and staff are afforded professional development opportunities through mini-grants, and the college creates networking opportunities for alumni.

This past year alone, the Annual Fund provided over 69 scholarships to deserving students. Approximately 70.5% of Purchase students receive some federal or state need-based financial aid, including student loans. The average 2007 household income of students who qualify for financial aid is $52,173, well below the 2007 average of median income for family households of $62,359 reported by the US Census Bureau.

The need for scholarship dollars is great. Although we try to keep tuition costs down, New York State increased tuition mid-year for all students effective the spring 2009 semester.  The in-state tuition increase alone is $ 620.00 and $ 2,260 for out-of-state for the 2009-2010 academic year.  The average estimated cost of tuition, fees, room and board for an in-state student in 2009/2010 is $ 16,863 annually and $ 24,763 for an out-of-state students annually.

We believe the ability to pay should never determine one's opportunity for an education -- yet at this point we are only able to provide 18% of our students any scholarship dollars, and the average scholarship award is just $2089 a year. This falls far short of the need.

Curriculum support to our outstanding faculty is also essential to the intellectual and creative life of our unique and spirited college.

The College calls on its alumni, parents and friends to give generously to the Purchase College Annual Fund, and not to underestimate the influence that their gifts can have on a student’s state of mind, energy level and creative drive – let alone his or her ability to stay in school.
