of the Application Process

Make a long range plan!  
Start preparing early! 
Discuss your goals with your Faculty Advisor! 
Establish a relationship with the Fellowship Advisor!
Use the timelines below as a guideline for preparing your application. 

Timeline for fall scholarships
  • Winter/Spring prior to application deadline – Visit the scholarship website to download an application.  Ensure your eligibility (do you meet the requirements for application?)  and begin thinking about your proposed plan of study.

  • March/April – Attend a Fellowship Information Session. Notify the Fellowship Advisor and your Faculty Advisor about your intention to apply. 

  • May – Complete three tasks: 

                        1) Determine your proposed plan of study.  
                        2) Begin a draft of your personal statement. 
                        3) Decide who will be writing your recommendations. 
                            (Provide them with your resume, personal statement, 
                          proposed plan of study, and any other relevant material.)

  • Summer – Submit drafts for review. 

  • September – Submit a revised draft of your application to the Fellowship Advisor.   Check on the progress of your recommenders and ensure that they are aware of the deadline.

  • Many scholarships require a Fellowship Advisor / Campus Representative to approve your application before submission.  Be sure that the Fellowship Advisor receives your completed application well before the official deadline.
Timeline for Spring scholarships
  • Summer/Fall year prior to application deadline – Visit the scholarship website to download an application.  Ensure your eligibility (do you meet the requirements for application?) and begin thinking about your proposed plan of study.

  • September – Attend a Fellowship Information Session for potential applicants.  Notify the Fellowship Advisor and Faculty Advisor about your intention to apply. 

  • October – Complete three tasks: 

                          1) Determine your program of study/research.  
                          2) Begin a draft of your application and essays.  
                          3) Decide who will be writing your recommendations.      
                             (Provide them with your resume, personal statement, 
                         proposed plan of study, and any other relevant information.)

  • October/November – Submit drafts for review. 

  • January  – Submit revised drafts of the application essays to the Fellowship Advisor and your Faculty Advisor. Check on the progress of your recommenders and ensure that they are aware of the deadline.

  • Ensure that the Fellowship Adivosr receives your completed application well before the application deadline.
