Project Overview

The Gunnar Birkerts & Associates designed Conservatory of Dance building was completed in 1976.  The building contains a mixture of dance studios, classrooms, administration and support spaces, as well as the DTL (Dance Theater Lab), a 'black-box' type of performance space.  The lower level of the building also contains classrooms and support spaces that are leased by Long Island University for their evening programs.

The building's roof and skylight covered corridors were recently replaced as well as exterior masonry repairs done to address the building's aging envelope which had been prone to leaks and heat loss.  Many of the original building's mechanical systems are still being used and in much need of repair/upgrading.  Additionally, many of  the existing dance studio floors are in need of replacement, interior lighting is poor, and the changing and bathrooms are in poor shape and not fully accessible.

This project will address these issues by installing new air handlers, new ductwork, heating and cooling controls, new interior lighting, renovations to the existing bathrooms and changing rooms, interior finishes, and a new sprinkler system.
