Dan Deacon '04 (music) is an electronic musician, well-known for his hyperkinetic dance music. In 2004, after leaving Purchase, Dan and several Purchase alums formed Wham City in Baltimore, MD. His first commercially distributed album, Spiderman of the Rings, ranked as number 24 on Pitchfork Media's "Top 50 Albums of 2007". His next album, Bromst, ranked #46 in Pitchfork's Best Albums of 2009. He was also recently named to NPR's & WQXR's list of 100 composers under 40. Dan regularly tours the US and Europe.
Currently, Dan is working on the film score to Twixt Now & Sunrise by Francis Ford Coppola. The film stars Val Kilmer and Elle Fanning and is to be released next fall. He is also composing, arranging and recording the Dan Deacon Ensemble album. Plus, he's working on the Stint Riddler set (ambient and noise pieces). In recent months, Dan's work has been covered by the Village Voice, NPR, Brooklyn Vegan, Baltimore Sun, Flavorwire, Sacramento Bee and The San Francisco Appeal, to just name a few.
The formation of Wham City, which included such Purchase Alumni as Jimmy Joe Roche '04, Ray Roy '06, Dina Kelberman '03 and Donna Sellinger '05, is just one of Dan's many collaborations with his fellow alums. Another collaboration is his work on videos, such as this episode of Showbeast.
Showbeast is a touring puppet show and video series comprised of Ben O'Brien '06, Erin Gleeson '06, Alan Resnick '08, Mason Ross, and Stefani Levin.
