School of Humanities

Curious.  Bold.  Imaginative.  Questioning.  Intellectually adventurous.  These are some of the qualities of the typical Humanities student at Purchase—though Purchase Humanities students can hardly be called typical.  The various majors offered in Humanities provide a solid foundation in the study of human culture, but also invite students to question conventional wisdom and explore the relationship between traditional modes of understanding and new styles of inquiry appropriate to the twenty-first century.

With several majors focused on the creative arts (Cinema Studies, Creative Writing, Drama Studies, Journalism, Literature, Art History) and others that help round out a classic program in the liberal arts (History, Philosophy, Language and Culture), Purchase’s programs in the Humanities challenge students to Think Wide Open.
