ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Admission to the B.F.A. Film Program is highly selective and is based upon an invitation-only interview of qualified candidates selected by the Film Faculty and Admissions. Students are invited for interviews by the Film Faculty on the basis of the variety of interests, talents and goals demonstrated in the required portfolio and essay, as well as an evaluation by Admissions on the basis of Purchase College’s general undergraduate transfer admission standards. Purchase College expects applicants to be highly motivated, hard-working and academically strong students with a G.P.A. of at least 2.5.  Only exceptionally talented students who can demonstrate their talent, creativity, commitment, and strong academic achievement during the process will ultimately be offered admission. Students not invited for an interview will not be offered admission. More on general admissions criteria can be found here.

*Note: Transfer students who were enrolled in an Educational Opportunity Program (EOP), Higher Education Opportunity (HEOP), College discovery (CD) or similar special program at their initial college should review the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) at Purchase College.

PORTFOLIO SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Submit your Portfolio consisting of your essay and video online at HTTP://PURCHASE.SLIDEROOM.COM. There is a $10 fee per portfolio submission payable at slideroom.com. Do not send the portfolio to the Office of Admissions. Portfolios sent to Admissions will be discarded and the application may be withdrawn from consideration

You must register on line at http://purchase.slideroom.com and upload the following portfolio materials by no later than January 15, 2010:

  • An autobiographical essay (1.5 pages, typewritten and singled-spaced).
  • A video example of your work not to exceed 10 minutes (You may submit up to five video clips, but the total running time of your clips must not exceed 10 minutes).
  • A statement/resume describing your role in the production of your video.

Applicants may upload images in docs (pdf) and video (mov, wmv, flv).  For good image quality and fast upload, please keep your video files under 60 MB. If you are having problems maintaining the desired quality of your video, you may upload your 10 minutes of footage in up to five smaller pieces. The online portal of www.slideroom.com offers additional instruction for submitting work.

*NOTE: If you experience difficulty uploading your portfolio, you must contact Slideroom technical support at support@slideroom.com for assistance. Please allow one day for a response. You can also consult the Slideroom Helpdesk and FAQ at https://slideroom.zendesk.com/home.

Note:  For the review committee, the essay and video are a critical aspect of the initial screening process.  Your best intellectual and creative effort should be demonstrated in both of these materials.  Your essay might include a description of yourself, a discussion of why you want to make films, and include any experience you’ve had that supports or prompts your choice.

Because of time constraints in reviewing a large number of portfolios, it is best to send only your best work.

Qualified candidates will be invited to Purchase for an interview.  Interviews are not automatically granted to Film Program applicants.  Those who are invited should bring portfolio materials (e.g. slides, scripts, films, art work) that show their best work, which is not limited to the ten minute segment placed on slideroom.com. Faculty members suggest that you bring two letters of recommendations (one artistic and one academic) to the interview as well.
