BAHCESEHIR UNIVERSITY
ARCHITECTURE, ART HISTORY AND SOCIAL SCIENCE IN ISTANBUL
Summer Abroad in Turkey
June 15 – July 11, 2008
The summer program in Istanbul is divided into three sections: The Archist program, the Istanbul Interiors program and the Social Science Program.
The Archist program on the architecture of Istanbul will explore the rich architectural heritage of a profoundly diverse and multi-cultural city. Known by various names during different periods, Istanbul was and continues to be the gravitational enter of the Orthodox Christian, Balkan, Caucasian, Anatolian, and to an extent, Central Asian worlds. It is, as such, a cultural capital of Europe and boasts a concordant variety of seminal buildings and provoking urbanspaces. With “on-the-spot” teaching methods, the Archist program addresses not only the usual give and take between the built form and its natural or urban context, but also helps understand the individual building as an integral component of the urban fabric. In other words, the Archist program provides the possibility of discovering meaningful relationships between the built form and its surroundings.
The IST-INT summer program on Istanbul's interior spaces will survey, research, analyze and interpret the rich and diverse spatial heritage of a multi-cultural city. Istanbul boasts world-renowned buildings with masterly designed and meticulously crafted interior spaces. The city's unique building stock offers intriguing examples of the relationship between interiors and overall building mass and envelope from a wide variety of design concepts belonging to many epochs and design trends.
Details of the Social Science summer program will be announced soon.
