Highlights of Italian Cinema

This course is designed as an introduction to the most influential works of Italian cinema in the twentieth century.  We will begin with silent cinema, specifically the Italian superspectacle, concentrate on Italian Neorealism, and then finish the course with a close look at the most influential works of Fellini, Antonioni, and Pasolini.  In each section, we will consider the influence of Italian cinema on international cinema and we will endeavor to understand developments in Italian cinema in relation to Italian culture and politics.  We will screen works by: Pastrone, Blasetti, Rossellini, De Sica, Visconti, Fellini, Olmi, Antonioni, and Pasolini.   (4 credits)
