NIH Bridges Program Objectives
- To increase the underrepresented students in the sciences.
- To provide academic and financial support for the underrepresented students, enabling them to complete a baccalaureate degree program in biology, chemistry, environmental science, math/computer science, or psychology.
- To assist degree recipients with job placement or advanced study in biomedical research.
- To increase collaborative arrangements among associate and baccalaureate degree-granting institutions and biomedical research institutions and corporations.
Program Includes
- Five-week Paid Summer Research Program
- Guaranteed admission to Purchase College for qualified students (see qualifications below)
- Orientation Sessions for First-Year Students
- Freshmen and Sophomore Seminars.
- Peer Tutoring Program
- Academic Advisor Assignments
- Academic Monitoring and Support
- Assistance with Course Registration at Purchase College
- Internships at American Health Foundation / Westchester Medical Canter and Albert Einstein College of Medicine
- Employment Opportunities for Bridges Students
- Salaried Summer Research Opportunities for Second-Year Students
- Bridges scholarship stipend to all participants as well as additional Purchase College scholarships for qualified students (minimum GPA of 3.0)
Qualifications
First year students must have a minimum high school average of 80, a letter of recommendation from their high school science teacher, and a written essay expressing their interest in the Biomedical field.
Second year students are required to have a minimum GPA of 2.8, a letter of recommendation from a faculty member of the school they are attending, as well as a written essay expressing their interest in the Biomedical field.
