Baccalaureate & Beyond Center

The Baccalaureate and Beyond Center is the umbrella for three Purchase College grants.

The grants are:

The Bridges to Baccalaureate Program
This program's mission is to increase the number of underrepresented minority students who attain careers in the sciences. 

The Research Science Visions Preparation (RSVP)
RSVP seeks to increase the number of students who attain careers in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM.) The grant also includes funding to foster innovative faculty pedagogy workshops in introductory STEM courses.

The Baccalaureate and Beyond Program 
This program's mission is to increase the number of underrepresented minorities, low-income students, or individuals who have completed an AA or AS degree, who continue on to a four-year college to study in the area of the humanities or the social sciences.

The Baccalaureate and Beyond Center Offers:

1. Community College initiatives
2. Programs to foster innovative pedagogy in introductory science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM ) courses
3. Programs to improve the retention of sciences students attending Purchase College

Community College Initiatives

The Community College Initiative’s goal is to increase the number of students enrolled in four-year colleges who major in the STEM fields, the social sciences, and the humanities. This initiative achieves its objective by collaborating with six community colleges to welcome AA or AS degree graduates who wish to transfer to a four-year institution.

Participating Community Colleges:
• Westchester Community College
• Rockland Community College
• Orange County Community College
• Dutchess Community College
• Sullivan County Community College
• Nassau Community College

The Program’s Recipients Receive:
• Five weeks of paid, advanced research offered in the summer
• Financial assistance for five-weeks of accommodations
• The opportunity to present their research
• Field trips
• Academic support
• Academic advising
• Financial support
•  Internships
• Job placement, or assistance with graduate school applications and medical school preparation
• Poster presentation opportunities at various conferences
•  Assistance for a seamless transfer from Community College to Purchase College

Programs to Foster Innovative Pedagogy
Pedagogy workshops are offered at the six partnering community colleges by faculty who teach introductory STEM courses. These workshops provide a forum for developing a collaborative learning experience.

Programs to Improve Retention of Science Students
The Office of Student Support Services located in the Natural Sciences building provides:

• Peer- tutoring an d peer mentoring services through Einstein Corner
• Bi-monthly science workshops for exam preparation
• Bi-monthly Mentoring Club meetings
• Book allowances
• Academic advising
• Financial support
• Welcome back-to-school receptions
• An annual reunion event for all program participants
• An annual dinner and lecture invitation for program participants
