Continuing Education - Youth and Precollege

Summer 2014 Precollege Programs in the Arts:
Video Game Creators and Animators

sci-fi video game action figureGrades 4–9

Typical Day

Create your first video game and understand the crucial elements in designing a 2-D game. Conceptualization, play experience, challenge levels, graphics and elements, music and sound, software, and simple coding are just some of the concepts that you will explore as you learn how to really get into the game because you made it yourself! The second week takes your game design to the next level by creating and animating your own character sprites, objects, and backgrounds. Start with a name and then develop the character’s personality, signature moves, special powers, and a story line. Finish with a fully animated character that brings your video game creation to life!

  • Student-created games will be available on a password-protected Black Rocket website to share with friends and family on the last program day and beyond. Games are only compatible on PC computers; Mac versions can be created after the program with a $15 conversion fee.
  • No previous experience is necessary.

For grade 9 (refer to youth programs for students in grades 4–8):
To broaden exposure to the arts, Video Game Creators and Animators can be combined with the Creative Vocal Lab, Vocal Intensive, Minecraft™ Designers and 3-D Video Game Creators (new!), Code Breakers and App Designers, Project Fashion Designer, 22nd annual Visual Arts Institute (grades 10–12), Photography Institute, Creative Writing Institute, and/or Shakespeare Workshop to make for a well-rounded summer experience.
