Summer 2013 Precollege Programs in the Arts:
Photography Institute

student photographers photographing at their exhibition

Grades 9–12

Develop technical and aesthetic skills in photography using digital cameras. The Institute’s focus is on camera techniques, lighting methods, and the use of computer software (Adobe Photoshop) for enhancing and refining images and for printing digital files. Students learn how to see and compose images through the camera’s eye and are encouraged to develop personal concepts by solving fundamental visual problems specific to the photographic image. Develop skills in presentation methods and archiving. Both the experienced and the inexperienced photographer are welcome. Program instructors will help students build a portfolio and offer constructive critiques.

  • Students must supply their own digital camera. (Bring your manual too!)
  • All other supplies are included in the program fee.
  • Students present an exhibition of their framed and/or matted work for families and friends.

To broaden exposure to the arts, the Photography Institute can be combined with the Video Game Creation and Animation Workshop (new!) or Songwriting Workshop to make for a well-rounded summer experience.

About the Instructors

Jessica Arditi (lead instructor), a working photographer, owns a business that helps people capture important moments in their lives. Jessica earned her BFA in visual arts with a concentration in photography at Purchase College. She has held related positions in the field, including helping to establish a growing photography department in two high-end gem/jewelry labs in Manhattan. She is excited to return to Purchase again this year as an instructor and work with students to develop their photographic eye and love for photography.

Michelle Huey (instructor) is a photographer and graphic designer with experience in everything from music to fashion to magazines. As a student in Purchase’s BFA program, she developed a unique view of how graphic design and photography could be even more powerful together, and since graduating has used her skills in both these disciplines to develop packaging for a large corporation in Connecticut. Michelle looks forward to returning to campus to share her passions with other young artists.
